The Usual Way to Say Thank You

धन्यवाद (dhanyavād) is the standard form, and carries a degree of formality. It is correct with shopkeepers, drivers, officials, and with anyone one has not met before. The word derives from Sanskrit, which lends it a careful and respectful weight. There is no situation in which it can be thought too polite. For a visitor, therefore, it is the best choice.
